Spring Trapping (Scotland) Approved Training

This training course follows the Scottish Government-approved course content.

The Wildlife Management and Muirburn (Scotland) Act 2024 introduced a requirement that anyone operating traps to be governed under a spring trap approval order (Fenn, Doc, Quill etc) must have:

  • Attended an approved training course

AND

  • Been issued with an individual licence from NatureScot.

Overview

This training course follows the Scottish Government-approved course content and fulfils Part 1 of this new requirement.

The course is designed for existing users of spring traps, however all are welcome to attend. 

This half-day training will cover:

  • Species
  • Law surrounding spring traps
  • Types of spring trap
  • Tunnel designs
  • Trap operation.
Delivery

This is a classroom-based open training course available to members and non-members.

The training will be delivered on behalf of BPCA by Cameron Balfour of the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC).

Assessments

There is a short assessment consisting of a 20-question multiple choice paper, and a practical assessment that must be passed before the qualification is achieved.
