Your day to day responsibilities will include:

Job purpose:

To manage and maintain the Entomology Laboratory, colleagues, external collaborators, and test resources in order to lead and deliver:

  • Innovation Projects to Proof of Concept stage (pre-D2 gate)
  • Testing to support other M&I initiatives, e.g. to support regulatory dossiers product development benchmarking and marketing claims testing
  • To use their experience of the company and the industry as well as urban insect pest biology and behaviour in order to deliver:
  • A primary point of contact in order to support the businesses with technical opinions and help in solving complex pest problems
  • On site support where required in order to demonstrate RI’s expertise and problem solving capability to customers
  • Identification of new opportunities for innovation / novel new solutions to complex pest problems or operational issues
  • To manage their team and the resources at the Power Centre to ensure that lab tour guests and other visitors receive an appropriately engaging and informative experience whilst in the entomology facility
  • To engage the wider RI community with our research and innovation agenda, including regular contributions to the Non Tox newsletter



  • Deliver designated Innovation projects either as a Project Leader or Workstream Leader and work effectively with Project Managers, other M&I personnel and external collaborators, in order to deliver data and reports on time and in full.
  • Organise Entomology Team support for other relevant M&I projects, including provision of resource for laboratory testing, expert consultation and advice, collaborating in field trials, writing protocols and analysing data.
  • To conduct product testing and evaluation which supports regulatory dossiers of RI products and claims testing initiatives to support sales campaigns
  • Ensure all project work is designed, conducted, data analysed and reported, in a timely manner and to a standard process to ensure conclusions drawn are accurate and data is available for later use, e.g. to support registration or marketing needs.
  • Responsible for reporting project progression and recommending next steps in the form of a report or presentation to a wide range of audiences from frontline staff to the senior management team. This includes presenting project updates at all relevant internal meetings and for transition to other teams within M&I.
  • Ensure that all work is proceeding to plan, and where they are not escalating risk, issues and dependencies to the Head of Science or Director of Innovation and Technical Operations for resolution.



  • To act as a coach and direct line manager to the Entomology Team
  • Manage laboratory resources (livestock and test rooms) along with staff workloads in order to deliver projects on time, in full.
  • To ensure the Entomology facility, livestock and personnel team are organised for each lab tour in order to be informative and engaging for a variety of visitors, from internal colleagues to customers.
  • To assume responsibility for Health and Safety for the Entomology facility and experimental work conducted therein, and flagging up any issues that cannot be immediately resolved to the Site Administrator or Head of Science.
  • Maintaining a sound understanding of pest insect biology in order to adapt and improve culturing techniques for all species held in the Power Centre and be able to explain their relevance to Pest Control.
  • Ability to cover for other lab staff in their absence, especially an ability to maintain the rodent colonies and carry out a wide range of experimental work.



  • Coach the Entomology Team to maintain the Insect Behaviour Google+ site, including communication of new findings through media such as video and podcasts that engages with colleagues in the businesses, in order to raise the profile of the team’s work.
  • Write and appraise entomology articles for internal (e.g. Non Tox magazine) and external publications, including the ability to communicate our own project findings in an engaging way to potential stakeholders.


Expert Knowledge

  • Act as a Group Technical Expert for the field of ‘Entomology in Urban Pest Control’ including acting as a point of reference for field operations and central functions and build strong relationships and communication with the other M&I teams.
  • Represent the Innovation Team on internal working groups such as the Technical Leadership Team and Vector Control Board
  • Identify, appraise and support emerging technologies in relation to insect control methods on a global scale.
  • Build external relationships with key suppliers, specialists, universities, expert industry working groups etc. ensuring RI is kept informed of latest developments and external thinking
  • Keep up to date on necessary skills and knowledge through reading journal articles, attending seminars, training opportunities, technical committees and conferences.
  • On site support wherever required in order to demonstrate RI’s expertise and problem solving capability to customers, and also to keep up to date with current practices across the globe.


Do you have what it takes? If you wish to be considered for this role you will need:



  • A working technical knowledge of current urban pest control techniques
  • Experience in New Product Development
  • Experience of experimental design and ability to manipulate and analyse large data sets, and ability to work at pace to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to communicate results and their significance to peers and commercial sponsors of work
  • Willingness to travel nationally and internationally to liaise with frontline colleagues, sometimes at short notice
  • Excellent English written and verbal communication


  • Experience with insect vectors of disease or other grouping of urban insect pests
  • A minimum of 2 years working within the pest control industry at a global level




  • BSc in a biological subject with at least GCSE level in Maths and English
  • Working knowledge of desktop publishing packages, particularly Microsoft Office and Google Cloud software



  • Qualified to PhD degree in an entomology discipline
  • Fluent in other languages used in the RI businesses globally
  • Full current driving license
