BPCA responds to bread recall over possible rodent contamination

PESTAWARE

Experts at British Pest Control Association (BPCA) have warned rodent infestations can pose a significant public health risk in the wake of a ‘do not eat’ alert from the Food Standards Agency.

The FSA issued the alert after FNM Bakery Limited recalled a number of their First National bakery brand products due to possible rodent contamination at a bakery manufacturing site.

BPCA is the UK trade body representing organisations with a professional interest in the eradication of public health pests.

Technical Manager at BPCA, Niall Gallagher, said:

“A rodent infestation represents a significant public health risk, as they can spread diseases, including leptospirosis, salmonella and listeria.

“We encourage shoppers to check that any products recently purchased are not included in the list published by the Food Standards Agency and to follow the advice provided.

“BPCA members have a key role to play in protecting food production premises from pests throughout the supply chain, from farm to fork.

“Our members work with property owners, who have a legal obligation under the Prevention of Damage by Pests Act 1949 to keep premises rodent free and with the owners of food businesses to ensure compliance with the Food Safety Act 1990.”
