Flies and their control

Flies are a pest associated with the spread of disease, and it’s therefore critical that they are controlled appropriately. Correct management of this pest and the correct procedures to eradicate them can help to manage the problem of flies in public health environments.

This one-day online classroom course will help pest controllers understand the importance of controlling flies.

You'll learn how to monitor flies and the most effective methods to eliminate them across a range of environments.

Overview

The course will use a mix of presentation and interactive sessions and will include modules on:

  • Reasons for controlling flies
  • Classification of flies
  • Fly morphology
  • Biology and behaviours of flies requiring control
  • Identification of flies significant in public health
  • Surveying and monitoring skills and techniques
  • Using survey data for the management of urban pest fly species
  • Non-toxic control options
  • Electronic fly killers
  • Chemical control.

While there isn't a pre-course entry requirement for this programme, you probably get the most out of this course if you already have your Level 2 Award in Pest Management. 

Delivery

This is a one-day virtual classroom course. 9.30 am to 5 pm.

The course will use a mix of presentations and interactive sessions.

The course will be delivered as an online classroom training course using the Zoom platform.  As in a classroom environment, candidates will be encouraged to engage in discussions, share experiences and ask questions.

There will be regular breaks throughout the day, including lunch. Please take advantage of these breaks to move away from your device and move around a little, as this will help you maintain focus throughout the day.

To take part in the session, you will need the following:

  • Computer, laptop or tablet
  • Internet connection.

Please note: Smartphones will work, however the session is not optimised for very small screens.

Slides from the training will NOT be available, so please ensure that you have pens and paper to enable you to take your own notes.

Assessments

Upon completion of this course, you will receive a BPCA Certificate of Completion in Fly Control.

If you are on BPCA Registered, you will earn 7 CPD points for completing the course.

If you are on Basis Prompt, you will receive TBC CPD points for completing the course.
