Hands-on Environmental Risk Assessments in Pest Management

Environmental risk assessments evaluate anything that can cause harm or danger to our surroundings, whether that’s the chemicals we use, other products or even just our actions. 

This course is aimed at people new to the sector or looking to refresh their knowledge of environmental risk assessments.

This one-day interactive course involves half-day classroom-based knowledge training and half-day on-site practical training.

Overview

As part of the classroom session, you will learn about:

  • Environmental risk and why assessments are needed
  • CRRU considerations, stewardship and residues
  • How to determine what animals to look for
  • Health and Safety
  • Creating a dynamic field assessment
  • Understanding risk mitigation
  • Pest survey and identification
  • Signs, tracks and building hotspots
  • The ERA form and how to complete it using the knowledge you have gained from the training.

You will then move to an active site for your practical session, which will involve: 

  • A practical walk around the site, which contains multiple points of ingress and recruitment with historical evidence of pest activity
  • Depending on the time of year and the weather, candidates will find evidence of (or be taught to identify the evidence of) a very wide range of British wildlife.

Upon completion of this full-day course, candidates will understand:

  • The need for environmental risk assessments and how to complete them
  • Risk mitigation
  • CRRU stewardship and the impact of residues
  • What evidence you find is telling you
  • Site surveys and what to look for.

While not mandatory, we advise that to get the most out of this course, delegates attending should already be qualified to a minimum of Level Two Award in Pest Management (or equivalent) and have a working knowledge of pest control environments. 

Delivery

This is a full-day classroom course. 9 am to 4 pm.

As this is in a classroom environment, candidates will be encouraged to engage in discussions, share experiences and ask questions.

There will be regular breaks throughout the day, including lunch.

Slides from the training will NOT be available, so please ensure that you have pens and paper to enable you to take your own notes.

Assessments

There is no assessment for this course.

Upon completing this course, you will receive a BPCA Certificate of Completion in Environmental Risk Assessments in Pest Management.

If you are on BPCA Registered you will earn 6 CPD points for completing the course.

If you are on Basis Prompt, you will receive TBC CPD points for completing the course.
