CEPA welcomes draft committee decision on AVK rodenticides in Europe

Confederation of European pest management associations (CEPA), has welcomed the European Commission's draft decision not to impose a ban on the use of anti-vitamin K (AVK) rodenticides for indoor control of mice.

In January 2023, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) released a report stating that it considers mechanical traps suitable alternatives to anticoagulants for controlling indoor mice infestations.

Anticoagulant rodenticides are authorised on the understanding that no other practicable alternatives exist. This statement from ECHA indicated that, in their opinion, mechanical traps can replace anticoagulants for the control of mice.

At the time of the statement, BPCA had significant concerns with this position and wrote to ECHA to explain this is not the experience of our members controlling mice.

CEPA also lobbied against a potential ban across Europe on these anticoagulant rodenticides, and commented:

"This is a successful outcome from our perspective, even if CEPA would have preferred the decision to be more explicit about the inadequacy of the scientific basis for the EU-BPC opinion.

"However, further work seems indicated at national level in certain countries, in line with CEPA's overall committment to defend access to the full toolbox of vital remedies to be able to deal efficaciously with unacceptable risks."

Formal adoption of the decision by the European Commission is expected in early 2024.

CEPA continued, "We would like to thank you all once again for your support in this campaign! We believe it really made a difference. We will keep you updated on any further developments."
