Following the eye-opening results of last year’s research, leading pest control solutions manufacturer, BASF, has launched its second annual mental health survey, continuing its mission to better understand and support the wellbeing of pest controllers across the UK.

The 2024 findings revealed just how widespread mental health challenges are within the sector.

One-third of pest controllers surveyed rated their mental health as poor, with 87% reporting they had suffered from work-related stress or anxiety.

Two-thirds experienced feelings of loneliness or isolation at work, and a third said their mental health had worsened since entering the industry - citing financial pressures, high workloads, limited time, working alone, and difficult clients as contributing factors.

Despite these concerning results, there were positive signs too: two-thirds of respondents said they felt comfortable discussing mental health with colleagues, and over 83% knew where to access support.

However, the survey also revealed that three-quarters of men still feel there is a stigma around mental health issues in the industry.

Building on this crucial insight, BASF is determined to dig even deeper in 2025, uncovering the root causes of poor mental health and shining a spotlight on the unique pressures many professionals in the sector quietly endure.

The short, five-minute survey invites pest controllers to share their individual experiences and thoughts around mental wellbeing, with a focus on topics such as stress management, work-life balance, and seeking support.

Laurence Barnard, Country Business Manager at BASF Pest Control, said: “In pest control, long hours, solo working and emotionally difficult callouts are all part of the job. For many, especially men, opening up about mental health can feel daunting or even taboo. Last year’s survey brought some of these challenges to light, and it’s clear that more needs to be done.

“Our aim with this year’s survey is to build a clearer picture of what our industry is really going through - and, importantly, to offer pest controllers a safe space to open up about their mental health without judgement.”     

The findings will be shared in November as part of Men’s Mental Health Awareness month with BASF set to release a series of insights, tips and resources aimed at supporting those working in pest control.

The company will also spotlight practical advice, signpost professional help, and share stories from within the community to help break down stigma and encourage more open dialogue.

Laurence added: “This is an issue that affects so many of us yet is often overlooked. We may not be able to fix it all at once, but by listening and learning from those on the front line, we hope to make a meaningful difference - and maybe even help someone feel less alone.”
