BPCA lobbies ECHA on Cholecalciferol

BPCA has submitted a statement to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in response to their public consultation on Cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3).

BPCA’s Simon Forrester said of the submission, “we need to keep every tool available to UK pest controllers, and with the pressure on AVKs from various bodies, BPCA and our colleagues from other professional pest control associations in CEPA have lobbied ECHA. While it's still early days, we hope our work to keep Cholecalciferol available will get a positive result".

The statement:

The British Pest Control Association wishes to make a cautious and conditional contribution in light of the current ECHA public consultation regarding Cholecalciferol

In light of the current ECHA public consultation regarding Cholecalciferol, the British Pest Control Association (BPCA) is interested in having an additional tool to control rodents. In view of the above BPCA wishes to make a cautious contribution, with conditions, in support of the dossier concerning Cholecalciferol.

Background

BPCA wishes to underline that one should remain vigilant vis à vis the public health consequences if the means to adequately control rodent populations in Europe is further curtailed. Continued access to anticoagulants (AVK) as well as the availability of additional substances is therefore of paramount importance for the professional community.

Conclusion

The professional pest management community sees the introduction of Cholecalciferol, in certain conditions of use, as an additional option to anticoagulants (AVK) to control rodent populations.
However, we would like to stress that Cholecalciferol cannot be considered in any manner as a substitute to anticoagulants (AVK).

The European Professional Pest Management Industry

The European professional pest management industry plays an important role in protecting public health and keeping homes, schools, recreational areas, hotels, food manufacturers, retail companies and others safe, pest and disease-free.

The European pest management industry is worth in excess of €3,000 million, employs more than 40,000 people in 10,000+ mainly small companies throughout Europe. In the UK, the industry employs over 7,000 technicians across around 2,000 companies.
