VIDEO: Can you sleep tight? Bed bug behaviour, monitoring and treatment

In this BPCA Digital Forum session, Alexia Naylor from the Bed Bug Foundation explores what current research tells us about bed bug behaviour, monitoring and treatment.

The session looks at how bed bugs feed, move, hide and respond to host cues such as carbon dioxide and heat. Alexia also explains why monitoring can produce false negatives when a room is unoccupied, how bed bugs use harbourages, and why established infestations can be so difficult to manage.

The discussion also covers:

  • How long bed bugs can survive without feeding
  • Why host presence matters when monitoring
  • The role of heat, steam and thorough inspection
  • Challenges in multi-occupancy buildings
  • Pyrethroid resistance and residual control
  • Silicon dioxide, diatomaceous earth and registration issues
  • Biological control options such as Aprehend
  • The mental health impact of bed bug infestations.

This session is aimed at pest management professionals looking to better understand bed bug behaviour and improve treatment outcomes.
