Case study: ALDI facility in Scotland tackles gulls with bird laser

PRESS RELEASE

ALDI's Bathgate Distribution Facility has successfully resolved a gull infestation on its rooftop by implementing the AVIX Autonomic Laser Bird Deterrent.

The cutting-edge laser bird deterrent system, designed and manufactured by Bird Control Group, has provided a highly effective and innovative solution to ALDI's persistent challenge.

The facility's rooftop, housing 4,000 solar panels, had been plagued by seagulls nesting and fouling, resulting in various issues. Contractors refused to carry out essential work on the panels, and the dropping of items by the gulls caused significant damage.

Moreover, the constant need for cleaning and the reduced solar panel energy output due to bird guano were incurring substantial costs.

Seeking a reliable and efficient solution, ALDI enlisted the expertise of Scottish Pest Control, which, recognising the severity of the situation, recommended the deployment of the AVIX Autonomic Laser Bird Deterrent.

Scottish Pest Control, equipped with comprehensive training from BPCA member PestFix, the official distributor of the AVIX Autonomic in the UK, installed the laser system on the facility's main roof.

The results were remarkable, as ALDI's Bathgate Distribution Facility experienced an immediate 100% reduction in bird presence.

The AVIX Autonomic Laser Bird Deterrent effectively repelled seagulls by automatically projecting a green laser light over the roof, mimicking the presence of a predator, and prompting the birds to flee the area.

The successful installation of the laser system has transformed the once-troubled rooftop, eliminating contamination and damage caused by seagulls and restoring contractors' confidence.

Moreover, ALDI has witnessed a significant decrease in cleaning expenses, coupled with a notable boost in solar panel energy production.

Installed in 2019, the AVIX Autonomic system has proven its long-term ability to deter birds, ensuring they do not become accustomed to the laser's presence.

The non-intrusive nature of the laser system, in contrast to traditional netting methods, made it an ideal choice for ALDI.

"We had a purpose-built chiller constructed at the same site and decided to install lasers on this as well, and to date, we have not had any
birds on it," stated the ALDI Bathgate Maintenance team.
