There was a lot of buzz on social media around the competition, with BPCA tagged in around 50 entries.

The rest of the shortlisted entries (see images below) were:

  • Kiley Clement, Absolute Pest Control - 'Sunset highflying'
  • Yukon Haughton, Hamelin Pest - 'Was that me?'
  • Leigh Tovey, Yorkshire Pest Control - 'Rice weevil'
  • Stephen Goodrum, Control Solutions Pest Control - 'Hello, can I help you?'
  • Lizzi Mills, Rentokil Initial - 'Dinner time' and 'Shall we dance?'
  • Lance Moeller, JLM Pest Control - 'Fox in Kitchen'
  • Kelly Farrant, Pest-Tech Ltd - 'Honey bee removal from chimney'
  • Philip Barnard, Barnard Pest Control - 'Pigeons in the park'.

Entries were shortlisted by the BPCA Staff team, with the top 10 entries put on display at PPC Live 2023.

The display drew a lot of attention, with attendees picking out their favourite entries

The winning photograph was then picked by a panel of judges, with experts from the pest management, PR and photography industries, and announced at the event.

The judges were:

  • Jane Shepherd, MD, Shepherd PR
  • Paul Westgate, MD, Veritas Pest Management Consultancy
  • Scott Johnstone, Marketing, Communications and Technology Manager, BPCA
  • Clark Smith-Stanley, Photographer and Aviator, Profile Studios
  • Simon King, Editor, Pest Magazine.

Justin was surprised to win, “especially after seeing the quality of competition”.

He explained: “The win means a great deal as I can now treat my wife to something special, as she's been through a tough few months.”

When asked about the photos and its subject, he joked: “The little chap in the photos certainly caught the customer out: disappearing into the car vent, we thought he was going for a blow dry!”

Scott Johnstone commented on the quality of entries this year, saying: “We had so many incredible photographs sent in to us, all interesting and well-shot.

“The photographs were marked on criteria like quality, uniqueness, humour, adherence to theme.

“We wanted to find the best image of public health pest control and Justin’s entry came out on top in the end.

“It was a close competition this year, so well done to all those who sent in pictures.”
