Frequently asked questions
Any pest management company that meets our membership criteria is welcome at BPCA. In fact, 96% of all our members are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
We have sole traders, small family businesses, regional and national companies in membership. Everyone must follow the same set of rules and pass the same assessment.
BPCA membership levels the playing field and helps small businesses compete with the nationals by having a standardised assessment process and membership criteria. Carrying the BPCA member logo proves to potential clients that you're serious about pest management and protecting your clients.
Each member company gets one vote, regardless of your size. That means that BPCA is run by people from all different sizes of companies.
The categories of BPCA membership are designed to reflect the needs of the pest control industry in Britain.
The membership benefits and criteria for Membership differ depending on the category of Membership you apply for.
Servicing Membership
Servicing Membership is for sole traders, incorporated companies, firms and partnerships engaged in pest control in the UK. This includes specialist areas such as fumigation, heat treatment or bird management. Full criteria >
Manufacturers and Distributors Membership
Manufacturers and Distributors Membership is for companies producing and supplying public health pesticides, application, protective and ancillary equipment for the UK pest control market. Full criteria >
Consultant Membership
Consultant Membership is for appropriately qualified consultants that offer specialist advice to manufacturers, servicing companies and clients of pest control services. Consultant members may also deliver training, act as expert witnesses, or advise on contract specifications and industry best practice. Full criteria >
Other categories of Membership:
Several other BPCA Membership categories are designed to reflect the needs of companies that do not fit into full Membership or meet our strict membership criteria.
These include:
Associate Membership
Associate Membership is for organisations with interest in pest control or who provide an in-house pest control service but who do not provide a commercial service. Associate Membership is designed to support these organisations with technical advice, support, best practice, training and guidance. Some of our Associate Members include companies such as major food manufacturers, concert and exhibition venues, and specification standards bodies. Full criteria >
Observer (international) Membership
Observer membership is international Membership of the Association and is only for organisations working in pest control outside the UK. BPCA Membership is a sign of quality in the international pest control community and demonstrates to your customers that you're working to the high standards set in the UK. Full criteria >
All BPCA Servicing Members are assessed by BPCA once a year and before officially joining; that's what makes us unique as a pest control trade association.
By assessing members, we can ensure that BPCA membership means something special to potential clients. We need to meet you and see how you work to endorse your business.
The assessment process is designed to help you plug any gaps. We have template documents and policies to get you up to speed, and our practical advice is more than enough to get you through the process.
You can learn more about the assessment process here.
Remember, if you're willing to grow, learn and adapt, you needn't worry about your assessment: we'll support you through the process.
Full Membership subscriptions are based on your annual UK turnover in pest control, making our rates fair for everyone in Membership.
We'll ask you to declare your turnover each year so we can charge you appropriately.
Fees are published every year on our website. You can see the current membership fees here: bpca.org.uk/fees
Remember, all the money BPCA makes from Membership, training, events and publications is reinvested into the sector. We're a not-for-profit, and without members, we couldn't represent and support the sector.
A trade association is the voice at the heart of a sector. Trade Associations are not-for-profit organisations made up of like-minded businesses wanting to improve their sector.
We're the point of contact for the UK government, and we help shape the standards for the sector on behalf of our members.
A Trade Association is about sharing expertise, listening to opinions and making industry-wide changes.
Trade Associations are OWNED by the members they represent.
Passionate organisations tend to join their Trade Associations. That's why BPCA is the only pest management association that is a member of the trade association for trade associations: the Trade Association Forum (TAF)!
The ultimate bosses of BPCA are the members.
We don't have shareholders or a managing director's pocket to line with your subscriptions. BPCA is a not-for-profit organisation here for the benefit of its members. Any money we make is invested back into the sector.
BPCA members elect our Executive Board, and you must work for a BPCA member company to become a director. In short, the people leading the Association are all members. BPCA's Executive Board are all unpaid volunteers.
Committees, working groups and special interest groups all help set the strategy and carry out much of our work. They're all volunteers from member companies too.
BPCA also employs a professional staff team that runs the day-to-day activities of the Association.
You can see a full breakdown of how this all works here.
The most likely issue you will face about membership criteria is the qualification of your technical team to a minimum Level 2 Award in Pest Management (or one of the equivalences).
We can help you with that. We have a range of support packages that are designed to be flexible and cost-effective, and we will be happy to discuss all these options with you so that you get the right support package for you.
Please get in touch with training@bpca.org.uk; we will gladly discuss these options with you.
While sole traders can join BPCA, individuals from non-member companies can't.
Our individual recognition and CPD scheme – BPCA Registered – is only open to employees of member companies.
