BPCA member company Lancashire Bird Control took home the award for Sustainability Initiative of the Year at the National Pest Awards 2026.

Lancashire Bird Control specialise in providing bird control services throughout the North West, across all property types, and both commercial and domestic customers. 

Richard Cookson, Director, commented:

“I’m incredibly proud to win the Sustainability Initiative of the Year award. This means a lot to me personally.

“Birds of prey and falconry have been a huge part of my life, and they’re ultimately where Lancashire Bird Control came from. What started with that passion has developed into a business that Carley Cookson and I have built together, surrounded by a team of people who have bought into what we’re trying to achieve.

“I’ve always believed that good bird management isn’t about simply turning up and chasing birds around a site. It’s about understanding why they’re there, understanding their behaviour, using falconry properly and combining it with the right techniques to create genuine, long-term results.”

Lancashire Bird Control were also finalists for Innovation of the Year at the award ceremony, which took place in London earlier this month.

The company has built their ethos around helping customers choose a solution that delivers lasting results, rather than spending money on proofing that simply moves the birds to another part of the site.

That might mean proofing, a bird management programme, or a combination, depending on what the site needs. 

Richard continued, “Over the years we’ve continued to learn, invest and develop. We’ve brought new technology into what we do, but we’ve never lost the traditional falconry knowledge that the business was built on.

“To have that approach recognised with a national sustainability award is something I’m genuinely very proud of. I’m also extremely proud of Carley and the whole Lancashire Bird Control team. 

“As the company has grown, so have the challenges, and there are a lot of hours, early mornings, late finishes and hard work behind the scenes that nobody sees.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported us, worked with us, trusted us with their sites and helped Lancashire Bird Control develop into what it is today.

"A very proud moment - and hopefully still plenty more to come.”
