An online guide is being issued to students in a bid to help them avoid pest problems as they settle into accommodation at the start of the academic year.

National trade body, British Pest Control Association (BPCA), created the digital document which sets out the risks posed by certain pest species and explains why pests may need to be controlled to protect health.

Earlier this year, the No Small Matter report, commissioned by BPCA, shone a spotlight on the impact of living with a pest infestation, which can include depression, anxiety and chronic sleep deprivation.

The student guide sets out common factors which can attract pests into a property and gives general pest prevention advice to help young people who may be living independently for the first time.

Natalie Bungay, Head of Membership and Technical at BPCA said: “University student accommodation is varied, but the common theme is shared facilities.

“Whether they are living in halls or sharing a house or flat, it’s important that students understand the importance of simple tasks such as emptying the kitchen bin and clearing away after a meal to avoid attracting pests.”

The guide is available at bpca.org.uk/pest-leaflets and can be downloaded for free.

Natalie added: “A pest problem can be distressing and unpleasant – and we always urge a ‘prevention is better than cure’ approach.

“However, if a pest problem does occur it can quickly escalate into an infestation, so the guide also offers advice on who to call for help.”

The guide also stresses the importance of strictly adhering to advice on the label of any pest products and ensuring that products – particularly those purchased online – are licensed for use in the UK.

If in doubt, students are advised to seek help from a BPCA member who will have access to professional products not available to the public and can ensure any pest issues are resolved safely.

Pest problems can be more common than many people realise.

The independent No Small Matter report, commissioned by BPCA found that pest management firms are estimated to have attended more than 4.4 million client jobs in 2025 - more than 12,000 every day, across homes, high streets, hospitals, schools, warehouses, farms and transport hubs in every region of the United Kingdom. 

BPCA member businesses are endorsed by the Government via the TrustMark quality scheme as they must carry the correct insurances and are trained and qualified technicians who are assessed to the British Standard in pest management EN 16636 and follow BPCA’s Codes of Best Practice.
