How do I stop birds nesting on my property?

PESTAWARE

If birds are nesting on your home or business, they can bring a whole host of health, safety and sometimes wellbeing problems.

They leave a lot of guano (droppings) which can cause health problems or lead someone to slip and fall. During breeding season some birds become aggressive, attacking passers-by.

And some species can be incredibly noisy, which over a prolonged period can cause stress and anxiety.

Can I get rid of a bird nest?

The first thing we need to be very clear on, is that ALL UK birds, their eggs and nests are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. This means that any action carried out should be by a competent professional with knowledge of this law and the licences involved with bird management.

You can't just remove a bird nest without following the relevant legislation and making sure the removal is carried out in a competent and safe way, for you and the birds.

That's why bird nest removal should be done by a trained and insured pest management professional.

Prevention, not cure

Ideally, you would stop nesting before it happens - prevention is always better than cure.

Bird nest removal or bird proofing are complex tasks that should always be left to trained pest professionals rather than attempted as a DIY project.

There are lots of ways to stop birds nesting on your property, and pest professionals will use things like barriers, spikes, nets and wire to great effect.

Other options like shock strips, audible scarers and optical gels have been used to create negative associations in birds wishing to land or roost on buildings.

All of these methods of proofing have their merits, and some can offer a stronger and more lasting deterrent, but as with any method of control, they may become less effective over an extended period.

There are several key reasons why professional expertise is essential, including safety, effectiveness, and adherence to animal welfare laws.

Animal Welfare

Birds are protected by law in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, and improper proofing could result in harm to the birds, breaking the law.

For instance, incorrectly installed netting can trap and injure birds, leading to distress and legal repercussions.

Pest professionals understand the legal and ethical responsibilities involved and implement humane, effective solutions that deter birds without harming them.

Safety

Bird proofing often requires working at height or in awkward spaces, which poses significant risks to untrained individuals.

Professionals are equipped with specialist safety gear and are trained to use it correctly, reducing the likelihood of accidents.

Attempting to install proofing measures yourself could result in injury or damage to property.

Effectiveness

DIY bird proofing often fails because it lacks the tailored approach that professionals provide.

Trained pest controllers will assess your property, understand the species causing issues, and recommend suitable measures, such as netting, spikes, or deterrents.

Poorly executed proofing could not only fail to solve the problem but also make it worse, attracting more birds or causing new issues.

Why choose a BPCA Member?

Choosing a BPCA (British Pest Control Association) member ensures that you’re working with a fully trained and audited professional.

BPCA members comply with industry standards, use approved materials, and prioritise humane, effective methods.

They can provide advice and proofing solutions that meet legal requirements while protecting your property.

For peace of mind and a solution that works, always contact a professional pest controller for bird proofing. You can find a trusted expert through the BPCA’s Find a Pest Controller tool.
